Birthday's Are Bittersweet

Birthday's are bittersweet, especially if you are a dog owner.  When Travis celebrated his second birthday, we went all out.  We had a cupcake scavenger hunt for him, lots of hoopla.  Yesterday, was Riley's birthday.  Yes, we sang to him and yes he got a cupcake (not multiples like his brother because he is watching his figure), but we really didn't make a big deal about it.  It's not that we love Travis more, because we don't it's just that Riley was eight yesterday and that makes me really sad.

Bigger dogs usually live 10-11 years.  I awoke yesterday with a sadness, knowing that I only have a couple of years left with my Rye Pie.  I don't know what I will do the day I lose him.  It' won't be pretty.

So yes, Riley had a birthday, yes, we made him feel special, but I would have rather the day didn't come.  I don't want him to be eight, I want him to be two.

Happy Birthday, Riley, your birthday Antler chew should be here soon!  God, please let the next few years go SLLLLLLLLOOOOOW!

Happy Birthday Riley!
I do know what you mean. I can't even think of losing my girls without having tears.

Rhonda, we are all in the same boat, Hamish will be 8 in a week, Sophie turned 7 in Feb.
We have to be like them and live in the moment.
They don't worry about tomorrow.
I am on a senior Golden Yahoo group who just had a party join and she has a Golden that is 17.
Several in that group have 13, 14, 15 year olds.
So think positive, that you will be buying antler chews for a long time.

Rhonda, I understand - really. I love your boy (as you know) and I wish he could stay two, or four, forever. Stay hopeful! When Lily was 8, she tore her ACL. We elected to do an expensive major surgery to repair it, and people thought we were nuts! My explanation? I wanted her to live another 8 years in comfort. Well, she lived to be almost 13. Not long enough, but enough to warrant hopefulness when she was 8. <3

Rhonda,

I can so relate. Molly will be turning 8 in 3 months. The time passes way too quickly. Cherish each and every day.

My Parker turned 5 on Cinco De Mayo this year. He's still such a puppy! I can't believe he's FIVE! I know exactly what you mean-- we are hoping for another 10 healthy, happy years from both Parker and Tyler (Tyler turned 6 in April.) I can't imagine our family without them.

Happy Birthday Riley!
